Pillar Leads

NNCI's Pillar Leads serve as leaders and advocates for Northwestern's data science and AI ecosystem, each advancing one of three core dimensions: Research, Education, and Infrastructure. Working alongside NNCI's co-directors, they drive cross-disciplinary collaboration, shape strategic initiatives, and help position Northwestern as a global leader in DS/AI discovery and innovation.

Sara Sood

Sara Sood

Education Pillar 

Sara Owsley Sood is the Chookaszian Family Teaching Professor of Instruction and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education in the Department of Computer Science at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering. She is a leader in AI education and natural language processing, with research focused on detecting and analyzing emotion, sentiment, and personal attacks in online communication, and is the founding program director of Northwestern's new undergraduate AI major.

Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy Gilbert

Education Pillar 

Jeremy Gilbert is the Knight Professor in Digital Media Strategy at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. A leader at the intersection of technology and media, he oversees the Knight Lab, and his work examines how new tools and techniques are reshaping the creation, consumption, and distribution of media, with a particular focus on the content and revenue strategies of emerging media companies.

Scott Budinger

Scott Budinger

Research Pillar 

GR Scott Budinger is the Ernest S. Bazley Professor of Airway Diseases and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. A leading physician-scientist, his research is focused on the integration of clinical data with emerging omic technologies to facilitate the translation of discovery-based science to patients with lung disease. A Northwestern alum, he has collaborated with investigators in Feinberg, McCormick, and Weinberg to bring discoveries to patients. 

Chris Wolverton

Chris Wolverton

Research Pillar 

Chris Wolverton is the Frank C. Engelhart Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering. He is an international leader in computational materials science and materials informatics, using first-principles quantum mechanical simulations and machine learning tools to accelerate the discovery of new materials for applications in clean energy, sustainability, and beyond.

Joe Paris

Joe Paris

Infrastructure Pillar 

Joe Paris is the Associate Vice President of IT Services and Support at Northwestern University. With nearly 20 years at Northwestern, he leads a portfolio of integrated technology services supporting research computing, teaching and learning, and university administration, and is known for his expertise in strategy development, cross-organizational leadership, and stakeholder engagement across the university community.
